It is a rarity for a nation to have competed under so many different guises in their history, but Serbia’s football history can be traced back to the early editions of the World Cup. They have competed as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, SFR Yugoslavia, Serbia & Montenegro, and then eventually Serbia following the dissolution of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. As an independent nation, Serbia has qualified for two World Cups, in 2010 and 2018. Even though their maiden adventure in the tournament featured a 1-0 win over four-time World Cup champions, Germany, they ultimately failed to progress from the group stage. Due to becoming fully independent in the middle of the 2000s, they have not yet qualified for the European Championship as Serbia. Dejan Stankovic has notched up the most appearances for his country with 103 caps, while Stjepan Bobek has scored the most goals with 38. As Yugoslavia they boasted some of the most exciting attacking talents of the late 80s and 1990s, with players of the calibre of Predrag Mijatovic, Dejan Savicevic, Safet Susic and Darko Pancev.
