Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has labelled Jurgen Klopp’s side an “easy touch” and a shadow of the team that won the Premier League and Champions League.
On Saturday Liverpool lost their first Merseyside derby at Anfield in 22 years when Everton dug in and earned a 2-0 win.
Although Klopp’s side have had to contend with a number of injuries this season - including a new one to captain Jordan Henderson midway through the match - Souness believes the team look nothing like the side that dominated England and European football.
“It was a shadow of a Liverpool team. Fair play to Everton,” Sounnes told Sky Sports after the match.
“It was thoroughly deserved by Everton. They were set out to be hard to play against. Liverpool had a lot of the ball but it was tiki-taka football most of the time.
“Whereas Everton did the business. They defended when they had to. Jordan Pickford has made a couple of really good saves, which is why he’s in goal.
“They deserved it today, but as a Liverpool supporter I’m deeply disappointed with my team. They didn’t look like they had any energy or fight or aggression and the best team got the points today.
“I think there’s no Liverpool player that can come off that pitch and think ‘I’ve had a good game tonight’. They are a shadow of a team.
“When you think of what Liverpool have been for three years - a team that nobody wanted to play against and were always on the front foot, super aggressive and must have been horrible to play against - now everyone wants to play against them.
“They’re an easy touch. That hurts me to say that. They’re an easy touch.”
